Cafe Cimino: A Delightful Surprise in The Heart of West Virginia
Café Cimino is truly a destination restaurant nestled in historic downtown Sutton, West Virginia, along the scenic Elk River. Now celebrating its fifth year in business, Café Cimino is one of West Virginia’s finest gourmet restaurants-upscale, yet unpretentious in its authentic Italian-Euro cuisine.
Café Cimino is housed in a renovated Italinate revival building, circa 1900, and owned by Tim and Melody Urbanic. Renovating and restoring the 100-year-old former Lee Hardware Store was a labor of love for the extended Urbanic family. Today, guests marvel at Café Cimino’s beautifully ornate, original metal ceiling and the warm rustic charm of the original America chestnut floor. The spacious and elegant dining room offers patrons a beautiful view of historic Main Street. The original 1901 brick paving that surrounds Café Cimino, as well as the lovely tree-lined courtyard, add to the charm and ambiance.
Chef Tim Urbanic describes the restaurant’s relaxed atmosphere as “farmhouse elegance.” Chef Urbanic’s menu is comparable to other upscale, urban restaurant and provides a dining atmosphere that transports diners to early 20th century America.
Café Cimino is named in honor of Chef Urbanic’s grandparents who were Italian immigrants and taught him about food-from appreciating ethnic flavors to growing the herbs and vegetables and cooking the famous Cimino family recipes. Chef Urbanic specializes in Italian cuisine and European dishes and uses only the finest ingredients to prepare his dishes. When in season, Chef Urbanic uses the organically grown herbs and vegetables grown on his family farm.
Perhaps the most exceptional ingredient to the success of this delightfully surprising restaurant along the I-79 corridor is Chef Urbanic’s incredible passion for cooking. After fine years and nearly 40,000 meals, his enthusiasm and love for bringing the tastes of his ethnic Italian childhood to his restaurant has remained unwavering. The restaurant has grown because of the overwhelming response from Café Cimino’s guests. Chef Urbanic’s wife and hostess, Melody, says that her husband’s menu has attracted a wonderful clientele who truly appreciate great authentic food and the relaxed atmosphere of the café.
The menu includes classic Italian dishes, such as Veal Osso Bucco, Shellfish Pescatore, Veal Saltimbocco and Mussels Italiano, as well as several great appetizers and sides like Italian Wedding Soup, Boccocini, Caprese, Gnocchi, Polenta, Bruschetta and Focaccia. Café Cimino also features more contemporary fare such as Goat Cheese Crusted Rack of Lamb; Filet Mignon Gorgonzola; Cornmeal Crusted Jumbo Shrimp; Grill Roasted Pork Loin; Shrimp Limoncello and Chef Urbanic’s famous Roasted Red Pepper and Goat Cheese Lasagna.
A diverse and sophisticated wine list completes the dining experience at Café Cimino. A solid selection of domestic and imported wines have been carefully paired with the chef’s menu. The servers are quite knowledgeable of the wines and are very helpful to guests in making their selections. The restaurant’s fifth year marks the beginning of special wine pairing dinners to offered seasonally.
Once you experience one of the chef’s selections, you are most likely to make the restaurant a frequent destination point. Café Cimino serves dinner from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. The restaurant is also now available for small business meetings, day retreats, conferences and special occasion luncheons. Reservations can be made by phone at 877/9CIMINO or on their Web site at www.cafeciminocountryinn.com.
